Summer 2010- now the work begins!!

Posted: September 8, 2010 in US History class

The summer of 2010 was extremely busy, yet very enjoyable. I spent most of July with my high school basketball team as we played 26 games in 30 days. The team was able to improve and younger players were able to get some valuable experience.

My family and I were able to travel a little bit as we spent 3 days in Laughlin, NV riding SeaDoo’s in the Colorado River under the 110 degree sun. At the end of July we traveled to Boston, MA for a 6 day trip. It was my family’s first real vacation and we were able to experience the East Coast and see so much of our country’s history. It was such a great trip that when we got home my wife started looking to see how much it would cost to move there! We visited the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Fenway Park, and a ton of historical sites.

In August I spent a week at UC San Diego at a basketball camp called “Point Guard College” where I was able to pick up tons of information and new ideas for my teams. We spent a lot of August relaxing and just hanging out. I was able to golf about once a week. I started golfing last year, so this summer I was a lot better and actually enjoyed playing a lot more. Practice Practice Practice…

My summer is boring. I only go to tutor and receive alot of homework, play video games that I already won, and build legos. I guess what I enjoy about summer is to learn new things in tutor and improve my grammar skills. This year is going to be hard. So my goal is to try understand most of the main lessons so that I can pass 8th grade. I am looking forward to learn more about the declaration of independence and world war 1 and mabey 2.

    • I’m sorry you had to spend so much time with a tutor. I hope it helps you, but I wish you had been able to enjoy more of your summer.

I HAD SO MUCH FUN THIS SUMMER IT WAS THE BEST SUMMER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. This summer, I spent my time- well, working – Obviously on computer related subjects. In 7 weeks, I made about $600 in profits, and have been giving from my parents to help pay for specific things such as Bills, loan payments, and food- since the economy is affecting all of us, especially now to us. Right before summer vacation ended, My older brother, my cousins, my aunt, and I headed to Perris, CA. Unfortunately, we got stuck, going through San Jacinto, delaying our arrival by 5 hours. Most importantly, I enjoyed this summer, and I was more active than ever!

  3. Tiffany Nguyen says:

One thing that I enjoyed this summer was getting to sleep in and helping Leadership stuff registration envelopes and helping at registration. My goal that I have for this year is to always try my best, and never give up no matter how tough things get. One thing that I am looking forward to learning about in US history are the ten amendments and about the past of America. 🙂

  4. Tiffany Nguyen says:

Okay, well hope you like my reply!

  5. Lina Huynh says:

I enjoy spending times with my best friend all of this summer, we had a lots of fun she sleep over at my house all summer and it turned out all great after all.One of my goal of this year was that i will try to get my G.P.A to be a 4.0.I am i looking for to learn in history is about what happens long ago.

  6. Michael Tran says:

In the summer, i saw on the news that salmonella death rate is increasing so I am afraid of eating eggs from the store. But I remembered that I live near a place that sells chickens, so i bought three chickens to harvest eggs of course. I also saved them from certain death. So far in one week five eggs. Very bountiful harvest. And so my goal for this year is to get a good great in history because I am bad at it. 😦 I am looking forward to learn about 9/11 and historic politics etc…

  7. Christy Ly says:

This summer I did many things for fun, but my favorite of them all is having my friends over for my little sis’s birthday!! It was fun we ate pizza, talked about school, and we played lots of games!! My goal for this year is to get an A for social studies for every trimester!! I will study really hard for every test!! I will put lots and lots of effort in my work!! I am looking forward to learning about World War I!! I want to know how it started and how it ended!! 🙂

  8. This summer i enjoyed when i went with my family to irvine park and did a barbeque. My goal this year is to pass my US history class. I am excited to learn about the World War 1.

  9. Kevin Tran says:

Hi. I am Kevin Tran and I am in your Period 3 S/S class. This summer, I went to a big Vietnamese Boy Scout Camp up in Lost Valley. I spent four hot days and four hot nights up in those mountains. This camp was so fun because my troop got to hang out and play games with about 9 other Vietnamese Boy Scout Troops. The weather there was really hot during the day. All you had to do was just stand there and you would get sweaty pretty quick. The nights up there are really cold, probably freezing temperatures. That was the best part of my summer. By the way, when you were at Fenway, who did the Sox play against? And who won?

  10. Alexis Sutterman says:

Though this summer of 2010 went by pretty quickly, I was able to go to a couple of fun places. I went to Illinois for a week right in the beginning of summer. Then, towards the middle of summer I went to Catalina Island for a day. After that, I spent my days relaxing at home. It finally got to the end of August, and right when I thought my adventures were over, it was my birthday! For my birthday, I requested a trip to Las Vegas. Why Las Vegas, you may ask, isnt that all just gambling for adults? Well, some people think that but I find it a very exciting place to be. We stayed at Circus Circus for 4 nights and every morning was a fun new day. One day, we went to a Cirque Du Soleil show. Another day, we went to the Adventuredome (theme park) inside Circus Circus. Then, one day, we just watched circus shows and played some carnival games in the kid’s area. On the last day, all that we did was eat the delicous breakfast at the buffet, and head home. It was a great trip and I bought two souveniers!
I was glad to get to squeeze in another fun vacation before entering school again.

Anyway, now that I’m in school, I’m trying to focus hard and get off on a good start. My goal for this year is not only to get straight A’s (though that’s a goal, too…) but also to learn a lot, understand everything, and become totally prepared for high school.
I’m eager to try to achieve this goal.

I am very excited about History class this year. I’m going to be fairly honest and say I found last year’s social studies material sort of boring. Sure, there were some nice things I learned about all the different continents, but the things we learned about didnt exactly interest me too much. I have a good feeling (just by taking the pre-test) we are going to learn about very cool things this year. I am looking forward to learning about how the United States became a free country. I have always been pretty patriotic and I cant wait to learn about things like the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and things like that.

I shared with you how my summer was, what my goals for this school year were, and the things I am looking forward to learning in U.S History. I hope you enjoyed reading this instead of falling asleep after the first sentence. Thank you and goodbye!

  11. Cindy Wong says:

My 2010 summer didn’t really start until August. Earlier this year, my dad decided that since I was turning thirteen this August, we should do something fun and special. True to his word, my dad booked a 7-day Carnival cruise to the Mexican Rivera.

A few days before the cruise, I started to worry. Since this would be my first time at sea on a ship, I was afraid I would get seasick. To make matters worse, my dad would tell stories from his childhood about him on a small boat with thirty other people and most of them got seasick. But when the day when we boarded the ship arrived, seasickness wasn’t even in my head.

We arrived at the cruise terminal at noon to find ourselves waiting in extremely long lines, one after another. It seemed like we would be here all afternoon, as if the line of lines had no end. At a little after five, the line of lines finally ended and we were walking down the bridge from the terminal to the cruise ship. Crew members greeted us by saying hello, shaking hands, smiling, noding heads, and handing out papers.

That week went by fun and fast. There was not one moment each day where there wasn’t anything to do. Every night when the steward came by to clean our stateroom, he would leave behind four mints, a towel animal, and a schedule of things to do the next day. The events would start at eight in the morning and the last thing you could do late at night before you go to sleep would be at twelve the next morning. (8:00AM – 12:00AM) The events included shows, bingo, dance lessons, laser tag, etc. When there’s nothing you want to do at a specific time, there’s always mini golf, ping pong, tennis, a jogging track, and a basketball court to keep you busy and entertained.

But that was only life onboard, there was a whole different variety of things we did at the different ports we stopped at. At Puerto Vallarta, we took a tour around the city that included shopping and a hike in the jungle. It was very hot and humid down there, but I’m happy that we did something before we left that evening.

The next port that we docked at was Mazatlan. At Mazatlan, we did a little walking on the streets and bought a new hammock for our backyard. We spent the rest of the day on the ship, since the weather was too hot for us. Soon the cruise was over and we had to leave the ship. This summer is one that I won’t forget.

My goal for this school year is to earn and maintain good grades for all three trimesters. I look forward to learning about the American Revolution this year in US History, it seems to be something interesting.

  12. Yun Kang says:

Nothing special occured this summer, but I enjoyed me and my cousin’s birthday party. It was really fun. We threw water balloons at each other and went for a 3 hour swim. The most important reason why I enjoyed it was because I got to spend alot of time with my friends. My goal is to maintain an acceptable grade while learning and fully understand US history. I’m really looking forward to learning about World War I if we can make it to that part of the book.

  13. Khanh Nghiem says:

My summer was very relaxing and boring. I spent most of my summer indoors. I wish I would’ve went out more. One thing I enjoyed was going to Universal Studios. I had a lot of fun, and I was really hot! I went with my family and spent the whole day there. This year, my goal is to get good grades. I don’t want to fail any classes because I want to get AP classes in high school. One thing I am looking forward to learning in US history is everything.

  14. Demi Ma says:

To begin with, one of the many things I enjoyed doing this summer was sleeping in. Don’t get me wrong-I did plenty of things this summer like going to Vegas, using my season pass 7 times at Wild Rivers, going to the beach, and going to Knott’s. Getting to sleep in was pretty cool since I usually wake up at around 6:30 am to get ready during the school year. Even though I may miss the pleasure of waking up whenever I want and simply doing nothing, I’m pretty psyched about this year at school. This year, I am hoping to graduate 8th grade with a GPA of 4.0. But that’s not just the only thing I want to do; I would really hope that I can finally get over my fear of doing projects and writing reports. Now that I’m in the 8th grade, I finally get to learn about our nation’s history. I am looking forward to learning about Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and how he reunited the north and south. So, overall, I had a great summer and hope to have an even better school year.

  15. Matthew Tran says:

The one thing i enjoyed doing over the summer is visiting the various and famous hotels Las Vegas had to offer. One goal I have set for myself is to not slack and get distracted as much as I did last year in all of my previous classes. One thing I am looking forward to learn is the history of the Declaration of Independence and more about the Constitution

  16. Monica Ha says:

What I enjoyed the most this summer was being able to sleep until noon. It may not have been really exciting, especially compared to Mr. Simonds’, but aw well. Though, it really backfired when it came to waking up early for school again. This school year, I hope to overcome my fear of meeting new before I go to high school. I hope to learn more about the Battle of Bunker Hill and learn more of the famous and historical speeches and sayings.

  17. Alan Nguyen says:

This summer I also went to Laughlin to water jet on the Colorado River. The thing i liked about this summer was to be able to sleep in. One of my goals is to graduate the 8th grade with a 4.0 GPA and understand the standards of all my classes. I hope to learn more about World War I ,like how it started and what was the outcome of it. I also want to know how the U.S history affects modern life today. So thats all I hope to have a great school year.

  18. Vincent Vu says:

My summer was okay. I went to tutoring, so I would be prepared for next year. What I enjoyed most this summer was swimming. I had to learn how to swim on my own. My main goal is to do my best throughout the school year. I’m looking forward to learning about the bill of rights.

  19. Naomi Pham says:

As soon as summer started, it was all boring. On August, I was ready to actually enjoy my summer by taking a vacation to Hawaii! Hawaii has the most scenic and beautiful beaches. The streets were crowded with people and there were many shops with many different items you can buy. They have some good resturants and foods there that we might not even have here in California. I stayed at Hawaii for 5 days and left Hawaii to go back to California to get ready to go back to school.

My goal this year is to get straight A’s and get my gpa to 4.0. :3

I’m looking forward to learning about how America stopped slavery.

  20. Cindy Truong says:

This year was the best summer of my life so far. I’ve been to so many places, but only one place was very special to me this summer. That place is Honolulu, Hawaii. I went on a day after July Fourth, and I thought this was such a great way to spend a vacation. I went with a party of fourteen people. Yes, this is a really big group and when we went on tours, the tour guides would always say, “Wow, a party of fourteen?! That’s a lot of people.” It was really fun though. My family and I went to the beach almost everyday, and every night we would take a stroll down the busy streets. We even got free offers to eat at a breakfast buffet right next to the majestic beach. Another fun activity we did was go under the Pacific Ocean with a submarine! We saw sea turtles, pufferfish, a jellyfish, and lots more. We only went on five day vacation, so it was pretty fast, and that’s the end of my vacation!
In this 2010-2011 school year, my main goal is to receive all A’s in all my classes. I’m not a perfectionist, but I’m going to try real hard to earn A’s this year, because I don’t want to get lower grades than last year. I’m really interested in the Civil War and I really want to learn all the details about it. For example, the generals, some famous slave owners, and well known people in that time period.

  21. Amanda Duong says:

Out of all the memorable activities I did during the summer, going to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Wild Rivers, and Knott’s Berry Farm were the ones I enjoyed most. Although getting straight A’s took A LOT of hard work and studying last year, I know that I earned it. I hope to continue that throughout all my years in school. U.S. history is the only type of history that I am actually interested in. I am looking forward to learn about the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and the history of how America became America.

  22. Lilian Nguyen says:

This year’s summer was great ! I met and learned so many things ! I also went to Legoland, Knotts, Universal Studios and Soak City ! I went on a cruise to go down to Mexico, Ensenada! Some days have been boring , but the rest were filled with laughter and happiness ! Throughout the summer, I’ve been trying to occupy myself. Suddenly, my friends and I were so caught up in board games (like Monopoly, Apples to Apples, Life , etc.) we went out of our heads without any time left thinking about boredom.

  23. Maria Luong Period 2 says:

What I enjoyed about summer was that I got to sleep at a very late time and that I got to go to my cousin’s house in San Diego. Although the ride there was very boring, as you can say, I had a lot of fun over there. There were many parties and I actually met a few new people. My goal for this year is getting an A in social studies. I hope that I could learn more about the Constitution and maybe the more about the ten amendments.

My summer was not as exciting as last year’s,I guess because of the economy.I spent most of my summer going on the computer. My summer consisted mostly parties.I started my summer off by going to Wild Rivers for free with my two friends Kelley and Huyen. We all had a blast on all the rides and we unfortunately got horrible sun burns.I also went to Photo Stickers and Tastea with them in July. The month of June was my lazy month,I didn’t do much but go shopping for new clothes, shoes, and school supplies.I went swimming almost everyday.I spent my summer with my friends more than my family.I realized that my summer was going to end very soon because it was August already so I tried to make the rest of it exciting. Therefore,I went to numerous amounts of birthday parties in August. It was my best friend’s birthday party.Emily invited me to Bella Terra along with Michelle, Amber, and Diana. The rest of the guests just wondered around with their own little group.I had summer school too,I really didn’t want to go but I did and got reclassified after a week. The day at summer school was even better because while I was walking home,my friend and I found some money lying on the street!I purchased some polaroid film with the money we found. After summer school,I didn’t really do much except visit DownTown Disney with my family.I hope this school year will pass by fast like last year.I want to stay out of drama and achieve 4.0
s and a medal, and pass Algebra 1.This year in US History I am looking forward to learning more about The American Revolution.

  36. Jenny Le says:

Over my summer vacation, I spent most of my time at school. Each day I woke up at 8:00 a.m and got ready for school. Each Friday however, we went on field trips; one of them was to Soak City. Near the end of the summer was when I went to actual places with my family/friend. On the Saturday of every week, my parents took me to Huntington Beach at night. We would make a camp fire and roast marshmallows. During the summer, I went to many beaches including Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Redondo Beach. At Redondo Beach, my parents, their friends, Cindy, and I went to the pier and walked around. We saw fishermen, shells, and much more. At lunch we ate a great amount of seafood.Yum! Near the end of the summer, I went to Knott’s and it was a blast. Now that I am back in school there’s lots of things to focus on. This year, a goal that I have set is to earn good grades and to graduate. One thing that I am really looking forward to learn in US History is the Boston Tea Party and the Revolutionary War.

  41. Kathleen Le, P. 4 says:

During the Summer, I had the golden oppurtunity to sleep in until the very late hours of noon (which is something my parents never allow or even let me die trying to do. EVER.) and in the later months, I had a little bonding time with family members and close friends with whom I’ve lost contact with. When school started, I finally found my motivation to get good grades, or if not, then at least knowing that I tried my absolute best. What I basically look foward to learning about US History is the major details of the First World War. That is, if we hopefully get there.

  42. Kevin Tran says:

  51. Melissa Cruz says:

This summer I went to Mexico for a little less than a month. It was a lot of fun because we went to a lot of different places. For instance we went to the beaches in Mazatlan and Vera Cruz. At both beaches the water was really warm and not so deep. I liked the beach at Mazatlan better because it had a lot of shells on the sand and because the water looked bright blue. Aside from the beaches we also went to the pyramids of Tajin in Vera Cruz. The pyramids there were really beautiful and even though the temperature outside was over 100 degrees it was still pretty fun. We also went to Guanajuato and Mexico city. On September 5 we came back to California on a plane and that was also fun and exciting. The thing that i would like to learn about in history is world war 1. My goal for this year is to get mostly A ‘s on my report card this year.

Ha, looking back, I’d thought my summer wasn’t all that exciting, but there were some few points.
To start off, I went to Anime Expo and stopped over Little Tokyo once or twice. It’s nice being short, since I got in to the expo with a child ticket hehe. I was mostly there for artist prints and stuff..
Watched a few movies here and then…

But really the whole summer was about visiting both my grandmothers in numerous hospitals from OC to LA…I actually spent most of August in LA at gran’s house in blasting hot weather; summed up in short despite drama.
    Boo.
But hey, it was fun making fun of doctors. The crazy ones are really the good ones.
Otherwise, my skin is so much paler than most people since I never really step out of the house, but oddly it’s been a lot more exciting than most summers.

This year, I’d like to focus on the United State’s involvement in WWII and various other wars…since really we seem to involve with every war known in someway out there…haha…?

  53. Kevin Tran L. says:

Something I enjoyed doing this summer was going to the KPMG world classic baseball program. My team and I stayed at Chapman University. The reason I enjoyed going to the baseball program is because I got to meet new people from around the United States and Hawaii. My team and I woke up every day around 6:30 to play baseball against some of the other teams. I also got to go to some cool events ,and those events are Fan fest, Home Run Derby, and the All Star game. One goal I have for this year is to become a 4.0 student and graduate from 8th grade and become a freshman. One thing I am looking forward to learning about in US History is when our country became independent.

Summer 10′! I think this has got to be the best summer ever even though I was often bored and wanted to school to start. My cousins from Maryland came over and we went to many places such as: Las Vegas, Universal Studios, the beach, ect. It was good seeing them again and catching up with them. After the day they left, the boredom and lazy-ness hit me. I had absolutely nothing to do. I was always wishing for school to start, already wanting too see all my friends again. I was glad to come to school near the end of summer to join Leadership and help with all three registration. I can say that it was better than sitting at home doing nothing, ahah. My goal this year is for all my G.P.A’s to be higher than a 3.5. I’m really hoping to learn about World War I since I really don’t know much about it.. 🙂

My goal for this year is to actually try the first 2 quarters of school because last year I didnt really give my most effort for those 2 quarters. If i tried harder I wouldnt have been yelled at by my parents. Anyways, I am looking forward to the Vietnam war which was in 1969.

Over the summer i went out to Lake Elsinore with my mom ,dad, sister and myself to put my dads hard work on to the test. Over the years he has put alot of hardwork into his 1969 sing ray, flatbottom boat.Which is a one of a kind and there is no other like it. When he got it it had no bow he replaced the motor with a dodge ram truck motor {which is in racecars]. the boat only lasted about a good hour on the water before we blew the head gaskets. It was a 440 engine to be precise. While on the water I laid down on a knee board and was pulled by the boat. it was fun but sort of scary because i dont like swimming in water that isnt semi clear. Which is because ive watched too many Jaw movies.Besides that i had a blast hanging with my next door neighbors at all hours of the night. Its sort of wierd how we really got to know eachother it happened like the 1st week out of school for summer vacation we were talking when a crazy, and injured drunk guy came up to us at like 2 in the morning so theyre 16 year old brother kenny told the guy to go away.the guy went over to my house so he told my sister ,my friend and i to get in there house . We called my home told my parents andthe police came minutes later. So ,we went home and the next day they asked to hang out so since then were like best friends.one goal i have for this year is to get either straight a”s or b”s or both in all subjects. One thing i look forward to learning in history is what kept america binded to the constntution and what was the main cause of the world wars?

Well, this summer I went to Palm Springs. It was really hot in the dessert. I mostly saw dead trees x.x , but when I tried going into the tram everything changed. They took me up the mountains about 1275 ft in the air. I was cool and breezy up there with my wild animals.
This year I’m trying to get all my assignments on time.
This year I want to learn about why there had to be war for land.
    Hope this counts :B

Summer was mostly boring. I was glade that I saw that P.R.I.D.E was already giving out free food during the summer; I only want there because I know that my friend would go. The best time was when my cousins asked my brother if he can go to Knots but he had to pay for himself. He would ask my mom for the money to go to Knots or he could get a now computer (old computer crashes a lot). If my brother goes to Knots he can’t get a now computer, if he gets a now computer he can’t go to Knots. So I asked my cousin “If my brother could not go, can I go.” And my brother wanted to get a now computer so I got to go to Knots with my cousins. It was awesome because there was no parents with us. I think my goal for this year is to get good grade, no missing assignment/s, and graduate eighth grade. I am looking forward to learn about a lot of stuff.

My summer was boring until I recieved a phone call. It was from a friend of mine, Anthony, and invited me to go to Wild Rivers with him. I told him I might be able to go if I asked my mother first. When I asked, she thought for moment and thought that I deserved to have fun for all the hard work I have done douring the summer. Anthony, his uncle and I then went to to Wild Rivers and had a great time. I guess I could admit it was the most fun ive had over the summer. Anthony is pretty cool for the invite. So I guess that concludes my summer and I hope achieve my goal to get good grades this year.

My summer was awesome,I had to go to alot of family birthday parties it’s so lucky when you have a big family cause lots of birthday parties and I went to 3 separate beaches but my favorite was Sunset Beach and me and my cousins ate at Norms. This summer makes me feel like the luckiest girl of the world but that can’t happen cause my dad was kinda ticked about math and learning so I had to learn at some part of summer. The next day I got to go to DisneyLand!! That night i couldn’t sleep so me and my sister had an overnighter while the time went by and POOF , next morning I changed ran into my mom and dad’s room told them to pack up and run in the car , I found out I live near a DisneyLand and I promised to myself i would walk there every summer and thats all i did for the summer, I hope this counts as a grade, but I’m looking forward for a even better summer. ^_______________________^
